Dear Online Friends:
It’s a strange world the wild tiger finds itself in at the end of 2007.
Latest figures out of India indicate there may be less than 1500 tigers left in the wild and possibly only 3000 remaining throughout all of Asia. In China, between 4000-5000 tigers are being raised on farms to satisfy a market based on traditional beliefs in the efficacy of tiger medicines. [see my Tiger Bone Wine essay] Those working to save the tiger need our help more than ever. Our funding is going in support of the following projects.
In India, via of Wildlife Protection Society of India [WPSI] headed by Belinda Wright:
Poaching and Trade Investigation Project wherein all poaching incidents of protected species are aggressively investigated.
Care and maintenance of Sonakali the elephant at Corbett Tiger Reserve and anti-poaching patrols as supervised by Brijendra Singh, Honorary Warden
Permanent field officer living at Bandhavgarh including a new aggressive ring of protection reward concept aimed a protection of tigers at the critical dispersal age.
A new patrolling and anti-poaching project at Satkosia Gorge Tiger Reserve in Orissa. According to recent emails from Belinda Wright, this is proving to be very successful.
A new digital camera project aimed as assessing the health of the last remaining tigers at Panna Tiger Reserve.
In Nepal, via The International Trust for Nature Conservation as supervised by
Dr. Charles McDougal:
Anti-poaching patrols and information gathering at Chitwan National Park. to include a new approach in support of Village Protection Groups. This past summer there have been many arrests of poachers.
Anti-poaching patrols at Bardia Tiger Reserve.
A new comprehensive one-year project of tiger monitoring and habitat survey across the breadth of Nepal’s Terai as coordinated by Bhim Gurung and Prof. David Smith of the University of Minnesota. We are supporting Bhim’s two main tiger trackers in the field.
If you can assist is in our efforts to help the tiger and it’s habitat your contribution would be greatly appreciated. Your donation is deductible for tax purposes within the limits of the law.
Warm regards and HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!
